Quality Answers to Important Questions About Spinal Decompression Therapy
1. How did my back get like this?
Answer: Your spinal discs do not have a blood supply. Therefore, the only way fluids and nutrients get in and toxins get out of your discs is by movement. As you age, your discs shrink, dry out, and cracks can form in them. Imagine that your discs are like sponges. When you are young, they are full of water and very pliable. Watch how much a child can contort his or her body! As you age, your discs slowly dry out. Notice how much less movement and how much stiffer you are after 40 years, than as a teenager. Then, as years go by, you actually start shrinking. This is due to drying and shrinking spinal discs.
Another way your discs can dry out and crack is if you have an accident that traumatizes your spine. When this occurs, the body locks up the area, and your disc no longer moves, drying out much more quickly. Sometimes fissures form in the outer layer of your disc, causing a weakness. The center of your disc (a jelly like substance under pressure) starts making a bulge or herniation in the weak outer casing. If this bulge presses on a spinal nerve, it can cause severe pain.
2. Can Spinal Decompression fix MY problem?
Answer: Yes. During the last ten years, major breakthroughs in non-surgical treatment of herniated, bulging, and degenerated discs have occurred. Since back surgery has a greater than 50% failure rate; after all the money, pain, and time invested in failed back surgery, something had to be done that would be effective. With chiropractic care, many, if not most of these herniated, bulging, and degenerated discs could be restored to normal. But, it took three-to-four years of regular care, depending upon the technique used and the severity of the problem.
Now we use Spinal Decompression Therapy. Using a special table, hooked up to a computer, your discs are stretched, creating a vacuum in the disc. This vacuum actually pulls nutrients and fluids into your disc and can even draw the herniated center of your disc back in. Then, as your disc compresses again, it squeezes toxins out. This stretching and compression cycle is repeated over and over during the treatment. Imagine dropping drops of water on a dried out, brittle old sponge – as more and more drops are absorbed by the sponge, it starts getting softer and expands. Once enough water is in the sponge, it is almost like new. The same thing happens with your spinal discs. Each pumping action draws more fluid and nutrients into your disc and forces more toxins out.
Clinical studies have shown a 71 - 86% success rate using DTS Spinal Decompression Therapy.
3. Does it hurt?
Answer: No. Not only doesn’t it hurt; it’s actually comfortable. In fact, if you are not comfortable, you cannot relax. If you are not relaxed, the therapy doesn’t work as well. We use DTS Spinal Decompression Therapy. It is the only spinal decompression therapy system that allows people to lie on their back, stomach, or side. In the others, you can only lie in one position. With the Vax-D, you can only lie on your stomach and you have to hold on with your hands as your lower back is stretched. With the DRX9000, you can only lie on your back. Also, these two units only address the lower back. The DTS unit that we use works on both the lower back and the neck (not at the same time). With the DTS unit, most patients report feeling a subtle, gentle pulling and relief on their lower back. Some patients even fall asleep during the treatment. You stay fully clothed and will be quite comfortable.
4. Is it safe?
Answer: Yes. There have not been any reports of adverse reactions using the DTS Spinal Decompression Therapy. It is so safe that it can be used with children and elderly people. If someone uses the therapy and there is nothing wrong with their back, their discs get more nutrients and fluids in and toxins forced out, resulting in even healthier discs. Each patient is given an emergency switch. If it starts to hurt in the slightest, just press the button and the machine shuts down.
5. How long will it take?
Answer: There are two parts to the treatment. 1) The DTS treatments take about 18-to-20 minutes. The total time, including Dr. Rand's supplemental treatment is about 40 to 45 minutes per treatment. 2) It takes about two-to-three months for a full treatment course. Although most people feel tremendous relief of pain within the first week or two, complete disc rejuvenation takes three-to-five months, depending on the severity.
6. Is the healing permanent?
Answer: After your discs are well and on their way to being healed, if you do not traumatize your spine, and you exercise regularly, and get the right nutrients to your spinal discs, they will continue to function properly and heal completely. If the damage that helped cause your spinal discs to degenerate is not corrected, your discs will start to degenerate again. This is another reason why we give a chiropractic treatment with each Spinal Decompression treatment. Of course, if you get in an accident, or do not continue to move your spine, your spinal discs will start to degenerate again. But, instead of going from a dried-out degenerated disc getting worse and worse, you will now be starting from a healthy disc, so it will take many years, if not decades, for your spinal discs to degenerate again.
